Advisers to King Mohammed VI held a high-level meeting on Monday morning with the heads of Moroccan parliamentary political parties to discuss their perspectives and positions on recent developments regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue and the Autonomy Initiative, following the latest UN Security Council resolution.
According to informed sources, the meeting, which was also attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior, reflects the Royal Palace’s consultative approach. This approach aims to maintain national consensus around Morocco’s primary national cause and align views on activating the Autonomy Initiative as the realistic and pragmatic means to conclude the protracted regional dispute.
The same sources indicated that the party leaders broadly welcomed the consistency of the diplomatic efforts led by King Mohammed VI to preserve the Kingdom’s territorial integrity. These efforts culminated in the recent UN resolution, which reaffirmed the credibility of Morocco’s position and recognized the Autonomy Initiative as a serious and credible framework for a resolution.
Meeting participants expressed their complete commitment to the King’s leadership in addressing this strategic file. They stressed the paramount importance of sustained national and human mobilization to bolster internal unity and maintain the current diplomatic momentum surrounding Morocco’s national cause at the regional and international levels. No specific details of the proposals or positions of the political parties were disclosed following the meeting.
The sources added that consultations are expected to continue in the coming days with political, economic, and civil society actors. This aims to forge a unified national vision that consolidates Morocco’s legitimacy in the UN process and supports comprehensive development projects in the Southern Provinces.
King Mohammed VI previously announced that Morocco will update and refine the Autonomy Initiative to present it to the United Nations as the sole basis for negotiations, describing it as the realistic and viable solution to the dispute.
This announcement followed the UN Security Council’s adoption of a new, U.S.-sponsored draft resolution, which its sponsor described as “historic” and which affirmed Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. The resolution received strong support from eleven countries, with Russia, China, and Pakistan abstaining. Algeria did not participate in the vote, and no member opposed the resolution.
During a personal address to the nation following the Security Council decision, His Majesty King Mohammed VI declared that Morocco had entered a decisive stage at the United Nations level. He emphasized that the resolution had delineated the principles and parameters required for a definitive political settlement within the framework of Morocco’s legitimate rights.
