U.S. and Moroccan Forces Conduct First-Ever Live-Fire Demonstration Using AMTEC

U.S. forces and Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) conducted the first-ever live-fire demonstration leveraging assets of the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC)to support a U.S. defense industry partner in testing long-range precision-strike capabilities.
The demonstration, held from August 3 to 7, was conducted as part of the Secretary of the Army’s Test Range Expansion Initiative and marked a significant milestone in U.S.-Morocco defense cooperation.
The event expanded opportunities to evaluate emerging capabilities under realistic conditions while supporting the accelerated delivery of new technologies to the joint force.
“The vision is to establish AMTEC as a regional hub for innovation, strategic cooperation, and industrial development, as well as a center of excellence dedicated to the experimentation, validation, evaluation, and development of advanced technologies,” said Col. Zouhair El Hamdani, Royal Armed Forces officer in charge of coordination. “This first live-fire demonstration marks a significant milestone in turning that vision into reality.”
The initiative is intended to further strengthen the U.S.-Morocco strategic partnership by providing a dedicated environment where military forces and defense industry partners can rapidly test, evaluate and refine new capabilities.
By fostering this collaborative environment, AMTEC is positioned as a multinational center for experimentation aimed at accelerating capability development and maintaining a tactical edge against future threats.
“Morocco’s partnership provides a crucial venue that accelerates readiness for the U.S. joint force and our African partners,” said U.S. Air Force Gen. Dagvin Anderson, commander of U.S. Africa Command. “AMTEC not only strengthens our security cooperation and drives innovation, it demonstrates that trusted partnerships are how we help tackle shared security challenges together.”
U.S. and Moroccan personnel established an expeditionary test site and conducted a single live-fire demonstration alongside defense industry engineers and technicians. The teams validated communications systems, assessed the maneuverability of wings, tires and trolley components, and collected critical weather and targeting data.
The event generated operational insights to inform future experimentation, capability development and employment.
“The AMTEC live-fire demonstrates where multinational training is headed, integrating emerging technologies with partner forces in realistic operational environments,” said U.S. Army Col. Michael M. Gacheru, regional engagement division chief, U.S. Africa Command J5. “As AMTEC continues to evolve in Morocco, we’re expanding advanced training, strengthening interoperability and accelerating innovation alongside our African and international partners. Together, we’re building a more connected, more capable force prepared for tomorrow’s security challenges.”
The event also demonstrated how AMTEC can support joint force modernization by connecting operational requirements with emerging technologies and providing defense industry partners with access to testing environments that are difficult to replicate at U.S. ranges.
“AMTEC is about turning innovation into operational advantage,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Corbett W. Baxter, exercise planner, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF). “This demonstration allowed us to evaluate emerging technologies alongside our partners in realistic conditions and rapidly identify what works. By shortening the path from testing to fielding, we’re delivering new capabilities to Warfighters faster.”
The live-fire event employed a low-cost, long-range cruise missile system designed to provide affordable, scalable precision-strike options while collecting operational performance data.
By integrating a U.S. defense technology startup into the event, Morocco and USAFRICOM demonstrated a model for rapidly connecting operational requirements with industry innovation.
“The AMTEC live-fire demonstrated how we’re bringing together training, technology and operational partnerships to build more realistic, data-driven exercises,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Hack, SETAF-AF deputy lead country planner. “Every demonstration generates insights that improve readiness, refine future exercises and help shape how we train and fight in increasingly complex environments.”
Beyond validating new capabilities, the demonstration reinforced Morocco’s role as a regional security leader and showcased AMTEC as a platform for multinational experimentation.
As AMTEC continues to mature, it will provide U.S. and Moroccan forces, allies and partners, and the defense industry with a cost-effective venue to evaluate capabilities across multiple warfighting domains.
Future experimentation will expand into long-range fires, autonomous systems, wireless communications and advanced sensing technologies, ensuring innovation translates rapidly into operational capability for the joint force.
AFRICOM is one of seven U.S. geographic combatant commands, responsible for military engagement across 53 African nations. The command defends the homeland by enabling willing and able African military partners to address shared security threats; leads joint training events to maintain response readiness across the continent; and supports U.S. government efforts in Africa to advance U.S. national interests and promote regional security, stability and prosperity.
